We're Alive!

The summer was busy and crazy and the school year is no less so this year.  I have tons of pictures from trips to Florida, California, and just fun but I have to find the drive they are all on.  My friend Kam and I make cakes together and recently we made Monsters cupcakes for my niece's birthday.
They were tons of fun to do and we were pleased with the outcome.  We just need a better camera to be able to take way better pictures of our cupcakes and cakes.

Life is good and busy.  G is at school full time, still in the bishopric, and is on the Student Advisory Council at BYU.  I'm still working for EFY and working hard.  It's a good life.  We are excited for the upcoming holidays.  It's our favorite time of the year!

Florida

George and I got to go back to Florida with my parents this last weekend.  It was a nice little break from every day life.  My brother was graduating law school and his son Lorenzo was being blessed.  We're so proud of my brother and his accomplishments and were excited to be able to be with him on his graduation day.

Before we got to Gulfport, we decided to make a pit stop in Orlando and go to Disneyworld.

You can only see the back of his head but there's Kev in his cap and gown and Vanessa and Lorenzo at the graduation.

Lorenzo had us cracking up the whole time we were there.  We didn't get to spend a lot of time with Olive because she was sick but each time we were at her house she got some coins and had to add them to her money jar.

It was great to go and meet that sweet little boy.  I almost brought him home with me.  We were sad to come home but will hopefully see them again soon.

National Infertility Week

It seems to me that this week comes around really fast every year.  In fact, at times it appears to be every week.  To be reminded one more time of my infertility is not necessary.  It lingers in the back of my mind almost daily.  It has shaped the type of woman I have become and that's not always a good thing but many times it is.  We've been encouraged this year to just share our stories.  I don't know if anyone will read this.  If anyone does, it's probably someone who has already heard my story but for me it is a little therapeutic to write it out sometimes so that I can see where I've been, how far I've come, and where the possibilities can lead.

Our journey began in May 2009.  We had only been married for a few short months but decided that my birth control was making me crazy and that I needed to come off of it.  We were going to use other methods of birth control but after conversations with my parents and a reminder of my age (P.S. 28 is not that old) we decided to go ahead and start trying to have a baby.  We prayed about it and felt like it was the right time to try.  Nothing happened.

In October 2009, after trying to get pregnant for six months, I was finally diagnosed with PCOS.  After years of doctors testing me for diabetes, someone actually figured it out.  I was put on metformin to hopefully put things back in order and was finally able to get pregnant.

We found out I was pregnant for the first time in February 2010.  George and I were both so excited.  Our families were happy for us, my mom even cried.  Then the bleeding started.  I had been told it was normal so I tried not to stress.  I wound up in the emergency room on Valentine's Day because of the pain I was in.  They took blood tests to see what my HCG levels were but they couldn't tell me anything from them.  I wound up back in my doctor's office a few days later with another blood test showing that my HCG levels were rising.  There was still a baby growing but no one could see where.  After multiple days of blood tests, it was determined that I was having an ectopic pregnancy.  I was given methotrexate to help clear my body out.  I was devastated.  Almost a year of trying, to just have it end this way.

I blew up at my family a couple months later when both my sister and my sister-in-law were pregnant.  Everyone expected me to just move on with my life and get over it.  I didn't feel like I could just get over it.  I feel bad now for that blow up.  I think I just didn't know how to deal with it all.

We tried to quickly pick ourselves up and brush ourselves off and convince ourselves to try again.  In May 2010, pregnancy #2 happened.  It was a couple weeks before it should have been and our doctor was not happy with us but it was what it was.  We found a new doctor who tested me right away and was with us through the whole miscarriage.  He tested my HCG levels from the beginning and called me personally when he saw that we were losing the second one.

On September 23, 2010 we found out we were pregnant yet again.  This time the doctor did everything he could think of to help us.  He prescribed progesterone but it didn't work and we lost this one too.  He suggested we visit an OBGYN for future plans for trying to have children.  We didn't go immediately.  George and I pursued some counseling so that we could try to heal our hearts.

To lose three pregnancies in a matter of six months was more than I could handle.  I was tired, my body was definitely reacting to the hormones and the depression I was experiencing.  I wanted nothing more than to just be better and to feel better.

In 2011, in an effort to get healthier, George and I registered for a half marathon.  We did it.  I was so proud of us and I thought for sure that by training for the half and getting healthier, it would help us keep a pregnancy.  By this time, we had visited the new OBGYNs office but the doctor had said that I needed to lose weight before they could do anything for me so I hadn't gone back.  We got pregnant with pregnancy #4 in August 2011.  This time at least, the nurse who helped me recognized that there was a bigger problem going on and that I needed to have some testing done.  They did a bunch of blood tests and everything came back normal.  I was referred to a reproductive endocrinologist at that point.

I think I dealt with that one a little better than I had the others (or at least I thought I had).  Turns out just a couple months after this loss there were a bunch of other big life changes and I kind of hit a wall.  I was a mess.  I could see myself drowning in this funk but didn't really know how to get out of it.  I just kept myself moving the best I could.  In the meantime, my weight continued to rise, my motivation continued to sink, and it took a lot to get myself out of bed every morning.

Why didn't anyone send me to a endocrinologist in the first place?  Probably one of the most frustrating things that I've experienced up to now is knowing that there could have been additional answers sooner if I had been sent in the right direction earlier.

We met with our endo in early 2012, did lots of tests (that all came back normal), and decided to wait to work with her until after Girl's Camp because I wasn't allowed to be pregnant and go to camp.  She reassured me several times that my weight was not causing my miscarriages.  What a relief to hear when that's all the doctors had been telling me.

When we were finally ready to try again, I was put on clomid and progesterone.  It made me a little wacky and I definitely didn't feel well but it worked.  We were able to get pregnant with #5 at the end of August 2012.  This time it looked like things were going to work out.  My HCG numbers rose and doubled like they were supposed to.  Then the bleeding started.  Within a week, it was gone.  Just gone.  There was no watching my HCG levels decrease, no hoping.  One minute it was there and looking like it would work and the next gone.

I recognized the pit inside of me.  The loss of hope.  The loss of caring.  My weight went up again.  I sank deeper.  I missed work.  I didn't care.  I spent money and didn't care.  I think my husband didn't really care either.  It was hard on us both.  The funny part is that no one saw it.  No one but me and him.  We had to hide it.  Make everyone think we were okay.  Make everyone think that we were happy.  I can tell you what though, baby showers, they don't happen.  I try to be supportive of and happy for my friends and family when they have their babies but if I'm being honest, I go home and cry.

It has taken me eight months to finally get some help.  Back to a counselor I go.  This time I see why I need it.  This time, I miss the old me.  I miss the me that went to church regularly and loved being there.  I don't like the me that goes to church and hurts because of all of the babies around.  I miss the me that loved to read my scriptures, attend the temple, and do things for other people.  I miss the me that laughed and that had hope.  I miss the me that wanted to make a difference in the world.

Infertility and Recurrent Miscarriages have changed me.

While there are those things that I miss about my old self, there are things that I love about my new self.  I am stronger.  I am tougher.  I recognize when I need help and I ask for it.  I feel stronger when I make it through a sacrament meeting at church.  I feel stronger when I take a teenage girl that I care about who is pregnant a baby shower present.  I feel stronger and more loving when I go to my friends' and family member's homes and hug and play with their children who it turns out love me and George so much.  I feel more humble and am working on my re-conversion.  I feel like someday I will look back on this whole experience and see that I may not be the person I was when I started this journey, but I have become an even better person.  Someone who is more compassionate, understanding, and kind.

I hope that with the help I am receiving I will become that person.  I will be able to look at this trial in a whole other light and that I will be able to move forward.

My infertility journey is not over.  We still plan on working with our sweet Dr. Gurtcheff.  Right now, I'm on birth control which causes all sorts of conflicting feelings inside of me.  It's supposed to help and get me to a place where we can try again.  I don't know when the time will feel right again.  We've looked into adoption and foster care and neither has felt quite right yet.  There is still more for us to go through.  I will try to learn to hope again that something will work and if it doesn't that moving forward with our other options will eventually feel right.

The time for healing is at hand.  I can feel it.  It's going to take some work but I'm ready to be happy again and not let this struggle in my life pull me down.  The purpose of this life is to show our Father in Heaven what we can do with the trials we've been given.  I hope that someday, I will be able to stand before Him and tell Him that I struggled but that I made it through.  Maybe not always gracefully but I did the best that I could.

While it doesn't always feel true, I am thankful for the trials that I am facing and for the person I'm hopefully being shaped into being.

Happy 4th Anniversary

Wow!  It's amazing to me how quickly time has flown.  It still feels like yesterday and yet it feels like it has been an eternity.  I remember feeling like getting married was never going to be an option for me and that no one would ever love me enough to ask me to marry them.  I remember moving back to Orem and wondering what the heck for.  And I remember my first ward prayer in my new ward where I met this extremely handsome man with graying hair and a deep voice and I thought, wow he's cute.  I'm thankful I had the goal to talk to at least two new people that night.  I'm thankful that he chose to go to ward prayer that night, which he typically didn't do.  I never thought in a million years that he would choose me to be his wife.

Dating and engagement was a whirlwind that I had vowed I would never be involved in.  My plan was to date for at least six months before getting engaged.  George told me he loved me within days of our starting to date.  I told him I loved him two weeks later.

We were engaged two months later on Thanksgiving and married on February 21, 2013.  I couldn't believe I had fallen into the Utah wedding plan but it didn't matter because I knew it was right.

Over the last four years, we've definitely had our ups and downs.  George started school and got an Associates from UVU.  He was in the YM presidency and then was made 2nd Counselor in our Bishopric.  He transferred to BYU and switched majors twice.  He ran a half marathon.  He has made it through so many of my ups and downs and has been my rock to help me through some of the hardest trials we've ever had.

I've worked at Continuing Education the whole time but been in three different departments since we met.  I've been in the RS presidency, the VT coordinator, YW camp director, and now a YW adviser.  I ran a half marathon. I found out I have PCOS.  I've had five miscarriages and have had my body strung through many different drugs and appointments.  I've held George as he's cried over the struggles that he has had and hopefully have been a rock for him too.

We've both had trials with depression, landlords, jobs, school, miscarriages, illnesses, and deaths.  We've had joyous times though.  We've been blessed by our Father in Heaven.  We've seen his hand through our trials and we count our blessings.  We've taken the time to remember the blessings we do have.  We've seen many nieces and nephews join our family and we've been blessed to be a part of their lives.

We've taken trips to Disneyland, Florida, San Francisco, and Idaho.  We hope to continue taking trips and enjoying the new things that we get to see together.

The past four years have definitely not all been easy nor all joyful all the time.  George and I definitely are not perfect and neither is our marriage but one of our favorite quotes is "You may not be perfect, but you're perfect for me".  We have our struggles as all married couples do but we work through them and become a little better every day because we have each other in our lives.  I'm so thankful that this man took a chance on me.  He has made me a better person and I love him with all of my heart.  Who knows where I'd be without him.  Happy 4th Anniversary to the most perfect man for me!  I can't wait for so many more.

I love you to infinity and beyond!

I've Been Thinking

I've been thinking about a lot of things lately.  Here's just a few:

  1. I want to learn to write better.  I think I may take a creative writing class.
  2. Is it better to be so busy at work that you can't breathe or so bored at work that you could poke your eyes out?
  3. I don't have to be perfect, I just have to be me.  Who cares what anyone else thinks.
  4. I'm not sure there are any easy callings in the LDS church.  They are all time consuming.
  5. New Testament is really interesting.  Whoever thought that I, of all people, would be attending a religion class at BYU and be enjoying it.
  6. Who cares if boys look at or like women's fashion.  There was a guy sitting in front of me in my New Testament class perusing women's fashion on pinterest.
  7. I love good food.  I could eat all the time.  Too bad my body hates it when I do that.
  8. Is there an age that you get to and you don't care about what you weigh anymore?
  9. Tax refunds are meant to be used to travel.
  10. How'd I get so lucky to meet a man who was okay with my crazy thoughts and loves me despite what I weigh?  I know so many women who deserve the same thing and I'm not sure how I got lucky.

Not really profound but they are the thoughts that have been floating around in my head lately.

Goodbye 2012

As I was reading a Christmas email that I got a couple weeks ago, I thought, man nothing really happened with us this year, until I really started thinking and boy did we have one heck of a year!

January
1. We dealt with our flood from December, had problems with our land lady and decided to find a new place to live.
2. George started school at BYU.
3. George changed majors from Physical Therapy to Mechanical Engineering.
4. I got a new washer (since the old one had flooded the apartment).
5. I turned 31.

February
1. We moved to a new apartment still within our ward.
2. Best of EFY was discontinued and my boss and I were informed that we would be moved to the EFY department.
3.  I was called to be the Girls Camp Director
4. We met for the first time with our new fertility doctor and she told me my weight was not causing our miscarriages!

March
1. Probably the quietest month of the year.

April
1. George turned 33.
2. George had a tough semester and realized that BYU was harder than we thought it was going to be.
3. George started a student job at BYU Continuing Education.  It was fun to work in the same building for a little while.

May
1. Our house was filled to the brim of other people's treasures for the YW girl's camp yard sale (never doing that one again).
2. YW girl's camp yard sale was done!

June
1. One of the YW dropped a gallon of milk on the carpet.  We were cleaning it out of the carpet for days and still smell it sometimes.
2. Girl's camp!  One of the hardest but most rewarding callings I've had.
3. I was sick during girl's camp.

July
1. We went back to the fertility doctor to start treatments.  I was given loads of drugs and became a wacko crazy woman.

August
1. First round of clomid didn't work so we had to do a second round.
2. We found out we were pregnant for the fifth time.
3. We actually had rising HCG levels for the first time that we've been aware of.
4. Semester two for George at BYU started.

September
1. We lost our fifth pregnancy.
2. We decide not to try again until the 2012-2013 school year is over.
2. George and I both got depressed.
3. George had to quit his student job because school at BYU is evil.

October
1. Our good friends, the Kellys, moved to Benjamin and we were sad.  We visit often though.
2. Halloween was spent at my parents eating yummy food.
3. I received new responsibilities at work and finally feel like I am doing something useful with my time.
4. George decided to switch from Mechanical to Manufacturing Engineering.

November
1. Thanksgiving with my family.
2. George tried to make it through the final weeks of school.
3. We felt a little sad putting up the Christmas tree this year.

December
1. I was called to be a YW adviser (still the camp director for now as well).
2. The evil semester ended but not quite as well as we had hoped.
3. George was off with no work or school for three weeks so he cleaned the house (what an angel).
4. For the first time since we were married we had 11 days off together.
5. We were sick for most of those 11 days.
6. We rang in the new year at our favorite bed and breakfast.

It was definitely an eventful year.  There were some heartaches and some big growing experiences but I'm thankful for each of those experiences.  I'm looking forward to 2013 being a year of healing and starting over.
